The basis for integrating energy aspects in planning processes is a thorough understanding of the existing urban planning process in a given city. Such a process should include all phases (see graphic below), steps, stakeholders and their related activities/responsibilities as well as instruments and tools used in planning urban development projects. The Urban and Regional community (CEAT), led by Dr. Jérôme Chenal, has launched an English version of the successful MOOC on urban planning in African cities. The 12-weeks long course, African cities: an introduction to urban planning, comprises an interdisciplinary introduction to urban planning in the African context. This course examines both the structure of cities and the ways they can be changed.
